Essential Oils for the Hospital Bag

A couple of weeks out from having baby #2 so I thought I'd better get my butt into gear and pack my hospital bag. First thing I did was make up my essential oil bag to support me during labour or cesarean, postpartum, and baby too.

I've had a lot of questions about what I'm packing and why. So here is a list of what's in my essential oil hospital bag... take what works for you and leave what doesn't. I have popped some alternatives there as well because what I may love and find calming may be different for you.

Note: ensure all roller blends are diluted appropriately with carrier oil. I personally use Fractionated coconut oil and I use 15-20 drops essential oil in a 10ml roller bottle topped with the coconut oil for me.

Early Labour

Calming Diffuser Blend
Citrus Bliss
Geranium
Ylang Ylang
Frankincense

I find these oils very calming and anti-anxiety for me, the citrus bliss will add the energy I need.
(Alternatives: Frankincense, Clary Sage, Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, & Wild Orange OR Wild Orange and Balance blend or perhaps simply Peace blend. Try using a few different blends prior to packing your hospital bag and see what works best for you.)

I will also use this blend for calming prior to a cesarean if this is how my babe needs to come into this world.

Clary Calm Roller Blend
Use this to massage into feet, ankles, and anywhere there's tension. Massaging into the lower abdomen will support contractions. I will layer Jasmine over the top as well to support contractions. If labour isn't progressing, massage Clary Calm just a few finger-widths above the inner ankle bone every 15 minutes.

AromaTouch Roller
I've made up a roller bottle with the AromaTouch massage blend. This is for hubby to give me a massage at any point during labour if I need it.

Active Labour & Pushing

Diffuser Blend
Peppermint
Citrus Bliss
Frankincense

DigestZen Roller Blend
Rolled onto tummy, feet, and/or pulse points if feeling nauseous at any point.

Cooling Body Mist
Peppermint
Lavender
Frankincense
A hint of Ylang Ylang

This blend is mostly peppermint for energy. Place essential oils in a spray bottle with a teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil (or jojoba) and top with green tea or rose water. You can add a dash of witch hazel as a preservative if you like.

This blend will beautifully cool the body as it's likely to get quite hot during this phase.

Ice Blue Rub
To massage into the back or areas of intense pain if the AromaTouch massage blend isn't cutting it. Especially if bub is posterior.

PastTense Roller Blend
I've packed this just in case I experience neck, shoulder or jaw pain. Headaches.

Peppermint Beadlets
These are for both hubby and I for a burst of refreshing energy. Even if he just pops one in his mouth while I'm pushing because he's likely to be close to my face and the aroma will be invigorating and energising for me.

Motivate Roller Blend
If I need extra motivation, encouragement, and belief during this phase, hopefully hubby can roll this blend behind my neck, and under my nose.

Perineum Massage Blend
When the baby is crowning, this blend can be massaged into the perineum to help with stretching the area.

Helichrysum
Frankincense
Geranium
In a 10ml roller bottle topped with fractionated coconut oil.

Placenta Delivery
Clary Calm roller blend massaged onto the abdomen.

Postpartum

- Clary Calm roller daily for hormonal support.

- Elevation & Cheer as a diffuser blend for when the baby blues hit.

- Lavender Peace (aka Serenity) for the diffuser for sleep.

- Salubelle (aka Immortelle) for the tummy to help with loose skin.

- Peri Spray for healing:
In a glass spray bottle add 6 tablespoons of witch hazel, 4 tablespoons of filtered water, 3 tablespoons of aloe vera, and 10 drops Salubelle (Immortelle).
Shake well and spray perineum area, or spray onto your pads, pop them in a freezer bag and freeze them for a cooling, soothing effect. Keep the bottle refrigerated if possible so the blend is cool each use.

Baby

I'm not personally using anything if possible on my new babe for the first 3 months except these couple of things...
Any babes under 12 months should have essential oils heavily diluted. I use 1 drop essential oil in 10ml fractionated coconut oil.

- Balance grounding blend on the feet to ground bub earthside.

- Myrrh on the umbilical cord to support healing.

- A touch of Frankincense on the crown to anoint her.

Notes: I gathered my information from Essential Oils for Pregnancy, Birth and Babies by Stephanie Fritz and also from watching doTERRA's Empowered Life series on Mothers and Babies.

Always dilute essential oils appropriately with a carrier oil and most importantly, use your intuition. If an oil doesn't agree with you, simply don't use it.

I made up most of my labour blends using empty, used essential oil bottles.

If you have any questions, please reach out. If you haven't started your oily journey as yet and wish to, you can order here or again, send me a message. I'd love to support you.
